How to Varnish a Painting | Oil or Acrylic

If you've invested your time and creativity into a beautiful painting, whether it's an oil or acrylic , you'll want to ensure its longevity and enhance its overall appearance. Varnishing is an essential step in preserving and protecting your artwork, providing it with a professional finish that truly showcases your talent. In this article, we'll explore the best way to varnish your painting, ensuring it stands the test of time and looks stunning for years to come.

Varnishing a painting serves several crucial purposes. It acts as a protective layer, shielding your artwork from dust, dirt, and potential damage caused by environmental factors. Additionally, varnishing enhances the colours and adds a glossy or matte finish, depending on your preference. By following the right steps, you can achieve a professional look that captivates viewers and accentuates the beauty of your artwork.

Selecting the Right Varnish

Before you begin the varnishing process, it's essential to choose the right varnish for your specific painting. There are two primary types of varnishes: oil-based and acrylic-based.

  1. Oil-Based Varnish: Ideal for oil paintings, oil-based varnishes offer a traditional and durable option. They enhance the richness of colours, bring out fine details, and provide a glossy finish. If you're working with oil paints, opt for an oil-based varnish for the best results.

  2. Acrylic-Based Varnish: If you're working with acrylic paints, an acrylic-based varnish is the way to go. These varnishes are more flexible, allowing them to adapt to the changing nature of acrylic paint. They offer excellent protection and can provide either a glossy or matte finish, depending on the product you choose.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Varnish a Painting

Step 1: Prepare Your Painting

Before varnishing, ensure your painting is completely dry. It's recommended to wait at least one to two weeks for oil paintings and a few days for acrylic paintings to dry thoroughly. I'm using a lint roller to remove any hair or dust from the painting.

Step 2: Choose the Right Environment

Select a well-ventilated and dust-free area to varnish your painting. Open your windows wide open. It's best to work indoors to avoid any potential weather-related issues. Lay down a clean cloth, cardboard or plastic sheet to protect your workspace.

Step 3: Apply the Varnish

Using a clean and soft brush specifically designed for varnishing or a sponge type of brush, apply the varnish in thin and even strokes. Work from top to bottom, ensuring full coverage. Avoid over-brushing, as it may lead to unevenness or streaks in the varnish.

I've put the varnish in a plastic container and I soak the sponge in it. You can also apply small amount of varnish directly on the painting. It's completely up to you which way you want to do it.

Step 4: Let it Dry

Allow the first coat of varnish to dry completely as per the manufacturer's instructions. This usually takes a few hours, but it's best to be patient and not rush the process.

Step 5: Apply Additional Coats (Optional)

Depending on the desired level of sheen and protection, you can apply additional coats of varnish. Be sure to let each coat dry completely before applying the next.

Step 6: Enjoy Your Beautifully Varnished Painting

Once the final coat is dry, your painting is now beautifully varnished and ready to be displayed or sold. The varnish will protect your artwork for years, ensuring it remains as vibrant and captivating as the day you completed it.
